Obituary for Debra Joan Fulgham

Debra Joan Fulgham
On September 13th, 2018 at Leigh Memorial Hospital in room 229, Debra Joan Fulgham passed away peacefully after reaching and passionately refusing to allow the effects of the final stages of Liver failure to dim her spirits. Sadly, only roughly 5 weeks prior to her 58th birthday on November 21st, of which she shared with her only son, Dennis H. Fulgham Jr (Denny to some). She first opened her beautiful hazel eyes on that day in 1960 in the small affluent town of Newport, Rhode Island where her mother, Ruth Walikangas had met Debra’s biological father, Jim Miller.

Her stepfather, James Walikangas was more notable as a paternal figure through much of her life. James and Ruth, continued to have three children, Jimmy, Helen, and Joanne, eventually settling in the Tidewater Area. Both Helen, her husband Dwight and Jimmy, his wife Donna were blessed with three children providing a beautiful extended family that created many memories that will last a lifetime. Ruth passed in 1997, after battling Lung Cancer and James in 2004, both were an active and unfettered participants in there grandchildren’s lives.

Debra, or Debbie as most called her was married twice, but spent roughly 20 years with her sons father Dennis H Fulgham Sr.

However, her past was never her focus, only a reflection of her legacy in that she loved hard and embodied every trait of someone that had an Indomitable spirit towards life and all it’s trails and tribulations. She filled a room with her laughter and unparalleled beauty, while unapologetically expressing her truth on a matter. She never allowed distance or time erode her love for her son and family, ensuring they never believed differently despite any hurdle that arose. She had a strength that was reflected by the waves of the Chesapeake Bay and Ocean she loved so much to be immersed in as often as possible.

She will be remembered as only the woman she was intrinsically as both a friend and mother. Thank you Debbie for everything you have given us all the way until the end, and you will be loved forever and always! “Eskimo and Butterfly kisses.”

A Celebration of Life to be held in Norfolk on a later date. Please check back for any changes to the date.
