Thelma was a vibrant and spirited woman. She was first married to William Richardson and had their daughter Sherry. In her 19-year marriage to William Gott, Cathy and Cindy were born, and Thelma served the US Navy proudly as an officer’s wife and ombudsman. Later, Thelma was briefly married to Lloyd Simpson.
Thelma was affectionately called “Thelma Lou” by family and friends. She loved holidays, crafts, decorating and followed national politics with a passion. She also loved playing Shanghi Rummy and always managed to win. She was fiercely proud to be West Virginian and a Thompson. Most of all, Thelma loved her grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Granny.”
Being a mother to her three daughters, Sherry, Cathy, and Cindy was the highlight of Thelma’s life. She was Grandmother to Renee, Lindsey, Brett, Tara, Mary, Blake, and Erik. She was also Great Grandmother to Camden, Ryder, Everett, Selina, and Cash. Thelma filled her home with cherished mementos, such as cards, drawings, and hand-written notes and letters, collected over the years from her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by sisters Pansy and Elizabeth, nieces Connie, Jamie, Tina, and Sandy, and nephews Randy, Thomas, and Homer. She will be reunited in Heaven with her father and mother, Ray and Thelma Thompson, an infant she lost in miscarriage, siblings Fern, Elsie, Bing, Audra, Harry, June, and Barbara, and nephews Harry, Wallace, and Edward Ray.
A memorial service will be planned in the future at Community Memorial Gardens in Wayne County, West Virginia. Family and friends will be notified.
