Obituary for John J. May

John Joseph May, known to friends as ‘Jack’ went to join his parents Jack and Beatrice, and brothers David and Patrick in heaven on December 24th, aged 81 years.

Jack was a dearly cherished husband, father, brother and son who passed away peacefully at home, after succumbing to injuries sustained through 2 recent hemorrhagic strokes in November and December. Jack was comforted by his entire family circle during his final few weeks, as he was led to walk with God into heaven.

Jack was born in Seattle, Washington and grew up in a military family with 3 younger brothers. He followed in the footsteps of his father and enlisted in the US Navy at age 17 and traveled the world as a career US Navy Aviation Electrician for 22 years. He ended his distinguished military career as a Navy Chief with the HSL 34 Helicopter Squadron.

After the military, Jack worked as an Equipment Specialist (Logistics/Ships) in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, retiring after 24 years. In both these roles he served his family and country proudly. He also was bestowed a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Old Dominion University in 1983.

On February 12, 1966, Jack married the love of his life Marian, and they spent 52 years lovingly together. Along with his beloved Marian, Jack is survived by his 6 children Laura, Kathleen, Michael, Jennifer, Eric, and David, and 7 grandchildren Chloe, Skyla, Jakob, Hailey, Summer, Lily, and Lucy, as well as his extended family including his brother, Paul.

Family was by far the most important aspect of Jack’s life and he was a family man above all else. He spent his free time supporting his 3 boys in Boy Scouts, sailing with his children, square dancing and golfing with his wife; leisure bike riding; holiday ski trips; and loved nothing more than playing with his grand kids. He was also very active is supporting causes in his local church and community.

A service celebrating Jack’s life will be held at St John the Apostle Catholic Church,1968 Sandbridge Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23456 on Saturday, December 29, with an 11 a.m. Requiem Mass. Burial will follow at Princess Anne Memorial Park.
