Karen Lynne McKown, passed away at the age of 56, Her passion was helping others, she had a unique ability to bring happiness into difficult situations. She always put others before herself, she lived life to the fullest and pushed others to do the same.

She is survived by her husband Craig of 37 years, daughter Amber Thomas and son Sherman Kristopher, grandsons Mikey Thomas, Sherman Joseph McKown; granddaughters Jayden McKown, Kalyssa Thomas, Paisley McKown. Also, she leaves behind her sisters Kathy Eck, Stacey Byers, Marcy Byers, Samantha Ettinger and her brother Darren Drake.

She is preceded in death by her mother Susan B. Anthony Beane, father Robert Drake, brother Robbie Drake, stepfather Frank Beane, and aunt Jan Anthony.

Karen was a 1980 graduate from Sheffield Jr. Sr. High School in Sheffield Pennsylvania. Karen received her bachelor’s degree in social work from University of Pittsburgh in 1991 and received her graduate degree in social work from Norfolk State University in 2000. She got her license in social work and began her career in 1996 with Fleet and Family Support Center where she eventually became a supervisor, until 2016 when she began a private practice.

Karen was a devoted wife and loving mother who raised two wonderful children while her husband was serving his country. She loved music and reading and was an avid Steelers fan. She loved family gatherings and spending time in their pool with her grandchildren. Karen was spontaneous and enjoyed hanging out with friends and family. She was a great friend who was beloved by everyone who knew her, which could mean she just met you in an elevator. She was like sunshine and radiated positivity to all around her.

Just know that she would want everyone to cherish each day and moment. To live in the present. To not “borrow trouble”. To spread love wherever you go. Don’t live with regrets and mostly forgive others. Her grace was abundant. She has brought us all joy as a wife, mother and grandmother “GG”. Her kindness was beyond measure. Her beauty radiated inside and out everywhere she went. She would want everyone to be kind to others because you may not know what they are dealing with, physically or mentally. So please spread positivity and love in her name. The world needs more of it. And more people like her.

I met Karen in 2000. We were both Domestic Abuse Victim Advocates. She was so wonderful to me. Loved that smile. We did groups for the women one Saturday a month. We all alternated. Now this is before GPS, and I am directionally challenged. Karen gave me directions to Little Creek where the group was to take place. Thank GOD I had her phone. I kept getting lost. She was so sweet. Don't worry Pat, you just be safe and get here as soon as you can. After many wrong turns, I finally got there. She was so proud of me, and I was feeling so down for taking so long. But...Karen made it seem like it was all ok. I will never forget that smile and always being there for everyone. I was so happy to see Karen go on to become a clinician and then to own her own business. She remained the kindest, loving person throughout all these changes. Hard to believe 19 years of knowing her left in a flash. Look forward to reuniting with Karen one day. Love and miss you Karen!
We always shared our pictures of our grandbabies. She love them dearly, as do I.

1962-2019 "what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own, the cars… the house… the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash." From The Dash Poem by Linda Ellis. Please know that so many have each of you in our thoughts and prayers now, and in the coming weeks, and months. Deepest Sympathies from Matt & Deb Labesky and Family.
