Obituary

Edward B. Kenavan YNC/SW USN (Ret.), 80, passed away peacefully November 14th, 2019 in the comfort of his daughter’s home, surrounded by his loving family: Kathy, Mark, Jennifer, Michael, Andrea, Blackie and Lucky.
Mr. Kenavan was born in New York City to the late Edward and Helen Kenavan. Edward loved the United States Navy, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service in 1987. During his Naval career he served in the Pacific Fleet onboard USS Wiltsie (DDG-716) from April 1958 to June 1960. Assigned to Commander Naval Forces Korea from July 1960 to May 1961 and District Intelligence Office Third Naval District from May 1961 to April 1965. Assigned to U.S. Element, Central Treaty Organization from April 1965 to October 1966. Served in the Atlantic Fleet aboard USS Algol (AKA-54) from November 1966 to to January 1968. Assigned to U.S. Naval Advisory Group, Republic of Korea Navy from March 1968 to April 1969. He served in the Pacific Fleet onboard USS Blue (DDG-744) from May 1969 to May 1970. Assigned to Commander In Chief Pacific Fleet Staff from July 1970 to July 1973. Served on USS Bainbridge in the Pacific Fleet from August 1973 to October 1978 and was initiated as a Chief Petty Officer in September of 1975. He was assigned to Naval Support Activity Brooklyn from September 1978 to August 1980 where he met his future Wife Mary Ann (Murphy) Kenavan. He then moved with his wife to Virginia Beach, Virginia to serve on Pre-commissioning unit from September 1980 to May of 1981, and as a plank owner onboard USS Monongahela (AO-178) from May 1981 to July 1984. His final duty station was Transient Personnel Unit Norfolk Virginia from August 1984 to September of 1985. Edward will always be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Edward was pre-deceased by Mary Ann, his wife of thirty five years, in 2016 and survived by their five children; Deborah Ann Phillips, Donna Marie Parsons, Kathleen Margaret DeVore, William Joseph Tompkins, and Michael Peter Tompkins.They also enjoyed the company of their many grandchildren; Ronald Dean Emerson, Christopher John Parsons, Jennifer Ann Stegina, Michael Scott Hubert, Ashley Nicole Tompkins, Kenneth William Tompkins, Rachel Lauren Tompkins, Megan Elizabeth Tompkins, and Lyndsey Jo Tompkins. As well as their five great grandchildren: Issac Kruger Emerson, Andrea Lynn Stegina, Xander Wolfe Emerson, Gunner Thomas Houlahan, and Aria Elaine Parsons.
All services will be private.
