Obituary

Ennis Ray Starrette, age 80, of Chesapeake, Virginia passed away peacefully February 9th, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Starrette was born April 6, 1939 to William and Grace Starrette in Person County, North Carolina. Ray served our country proudly in USMC Reserves. Serving his community was very special to Ray. He was a police officer with the City of Chesapeake for 10 years and later worked for the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office, retiring as a lieutenant after 22 years of dedicated service. Ray was a longtime member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He loved to dance, fish, and was an avid Washington Redskins fan and he loved spending time with his family and friends. Ray will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish his memory is: his wife of 12 wonderful years, Ann Starrette; four children: Kevin Starrette and wife Tammy, Karen Batten and husband Terry, Eric Starrette and Angie Henderson; brother, Richard Starrette and wife Sandra; five grandchildren: Brandon Barnett, Tyler Starrette, Ashton Starrette, Kendra Batten and Travis Batten; one great-grandchild; Brandon Barnett, Jr; two nieces, Sharon Sykes and Nicole Cowand; three nephews: Brett Starrette, Leslie Starrette and Wayne Starrette; two stepchildren, Daniel DeVauld and wife Krista, Michelle Sauls ; four step grandchildren: Kyle DeVauld, Dustin DeVauld, Meghan Sauls and Matthew Sauls. Mr. Starrette was preceded in death by both parents and a brother, Billy Starrette; and a surviving sister-in-law, Margaret Starrette.

A Catholic Mass with be held at 10:00 am, Saturday February 15th, 2020 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to www.tmcfunding.com. Donations made in Ray’s honor will be divided equally among the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Diabetes Association.

Lt. Starrette was one of the first training officers I met when I was at the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office back in 1989. Over the years I found him to be a dedicated individual who was honest, sincere, and more than willing to lend a helping hand.

My condolences go out to his family at this time.
