Obituary

Joan Theresa Proctor of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away May 5, 2020 at the age of 88. Joan was born on February 7, 1932 in Boston, MA and was adopted by Edward and Julia Prendergast around the age of four. She was raised in Needham, MA and Detroit, MI.

Joan graduated from Dominican High School and Macomb Community College in Michigan. She was very proud of her career as a labor and delivery nurse where she worked for 16+ years at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, MI. Joan was a member of Unity Church in Rochester, MI and Unity Renaissance in Chesapeake, VA where she volunteered in many positions. She spent 12+ years as a devoted volunteer at The Edgar Cayce Foundation A.R.E. (Association for Research and Enlightenment) in Virginia Beach, VA. She so enjoyed her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, good books and movies.

Joan is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Jack, whom she was married to for 28 years, daughter Kristine Lutz, son Peter Lutz, granddaughter Joan Louise Lutz, sisters Ruth Jones and Katherine Gustafson (Vic), stepchildren Cheryl Simmons (Kevin), John Proctor (Sam), Sheila Proctor and Tom Proctor, nephews Brad and David Jones, Peter Klein, nieces Kristen Cocaccetta and Megan Tuquero, stepbrother Brian MacRae (Nova Scotia), grandchildren John, Josh and Michael Proctor, Rick Kresinske, Kara Stempkowski, as well as many relatives and friends.

Joan was predeceased by her daughter Michele Lutz, son Erik Lutz, and parents Edward and Julia Prendergast.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date due to the restrictions of the Covid-19 virus.

A special thank you to nurse Caroline Sherman of Sentara Health Care Hospice, a wonderful and compassionate person and nurse.

Much love to Jack and his family in the wake of my Aunt Joan’s passing. I always enjoyed getting to see her which wasn’t as often I would have liked because we lived on opposite ends of the country. I relished my time with Joan and Jack when they visited Vicki and me in Seattle, and my time in Fayetteville with Joan during Ashley’s wedding celebration. And we’ll always think of Joan at Christmas when we bring out the ceramic lighted Christmas tree she gave us - David Jones
