Obituary

Sang Yop (Tommy) Lee, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away on Saturday (June 13, 2020) at 4739 Sweetwood Ct. Virginia Beach, VA, where he had lived with his wife Sunkyong Park and his daughter Kelly. He was 48 and died of colon cancer.

He was born on September 15, 1971 in South Korea. He graduated from Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, VA in 1990 and from Old Dominion University in 1998. He studied art and graphic design and upon graduation, joined the staff of WHRO and PBS as stage designer in Norfolk, VA. Later he pursued his career at the Norfolk State University where he worked with the Academic Affair department and he loved coaching students how to navigate to acquire resources that are available in the university for their academic and later career success.

While caring for his illness, he fell in love with the wonder of the nature and natural resources that offer healing power and dreamed of becoming a farmer and pursuing an interest in organic farming.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Sunkyong Park, and daughter, Kelly, biological father, Kyung Ik Lee, step father, Franklin Haskins, mother, Haeng Ja Kim Haskins, brother and his wife, Hyon Ku Lee and Eunsil, and sister, Shinae Lee Kim .

I have never met a more affable and agreeable man than Tommy. His easy laughter, gentleness of spirit, and undeniable generosity in sharing both his time and knowledge are indelibly etched not only in my mind but--I am certain--in the minds of all those he touched.

I am truly sorry for your loss, Sunkyong Park and Kelly. Know that Tommy wore many hats: husband, father, co-worker, confidant, naturalist, technophile, graphic designer, FRIEND! Thank you for sharing him with his Norfolk State University family. His life touched many, and we are all richer for it.

Respectfully,
Michael J. Cotter
