Obituary

Virginia Constance Julie Callahan, age 96 of Virginia Beach, Va, passed away at Kempsville Health and Rehabilitation on August 29, 2020 due to COVID-19 related symptoms. She was born in New York, attended Queens College, and raised her family with her husband, married 63 years, in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ.
Virginia was an avid reader with a passion for creative writing that motivated her to continue taking college classes well into her sixties. She edited her father-in-law’s biography published in 1981. She also loved music and singing and was a member of the Sweet Adelines Chorus in Mahwah, NJ for over 35 years.
Other hobbies that she enjoyed included bridge, square dancing, tennis, and gardening. In the 1970’s she was elected Vice President of the Ridgewood Women’s Club in NJ where she helped raise funds for many charities. Most importantly, she will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Virginia is survived by her children - Gail, Maureen, and Larry, her 4 cherished grandchildren- Julie, Derek, Robert, and Ariel - her sister Gloria, and her nieces Evelyn and Vivian.
In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her nephew Bob, her husband, Emerson Callahan, and their son Gerry.
A funeral service will be held at a later date.

My Aunt Virginia was a kind and vibrant woman who I will always remember for her hospitality and warm personality. I enjoyed our times together during the summers with cousins and Uncle Emerson very much will always treasure these memories.

Thankyou Vivian, those are great memories from the 60’s and 70’s! Eleven of us in the house for a week; my mother always looked forward to your yearly family visit!

Dear Maureen and Family...words are inadequate, however, Dave and I are saddened about the loss of you mother. I didn't know her well but I truly enjoyed the time I spent with her....dinners at your house, the dentist office and then taking her home, visiting her at the nursing home with you. She was quite an accomplished and gifted lady. She will be missed. She is now at peace with the Lord. We are here if you need anything at all.❤ blessings Debbie and Dave

Thank you so much Debbie. Your kindness towards my mother resonated with her; she always asked me how you were doing when I’d frequently visit with her after my dad died. And I do remember that time we went to the nursing home together to see her. It’s a good friend that’s willing to do that and I really appreciate how you made my mother feel special!
