Charlotte Ann DiSantis entered into glory on September 30, 2020 at the age of 78 with her beloved cousin, Joyce Kirby and her dear friends, Ashly “Long Legs” Perry and Kay “Kay Kay” Adams by her side. Charlotte was supported, encouraged and empowered by Hope House Foundation since November 9, 1976. Through that support Charlotte overcame many obstacles in her life and learned independent skills that enabled her to live in her own apartment until her death.

In 1987, Charlotte began to learn work skills at the Louise Eggleston Center and was employed there for a period of time until she retired at age 55. Since then Charlotte enjoyed watching TV, listening to music and singing karaoke, coloring, playing with her dolls and doing ceramics at the Therapeutic Recreation Center in Norfolk. Charlotte loved people made many good friends and amazing memories along her journey in life. Charlotte also loved animals. Her cat, Smokey, brought her endless hours of joy and was always by her side.

Charlotte was predeceased by her very special aunt, Minnie Yocca (whom she affectionately called “Mommy”), her uncle Tony Yocca and her cousins John Yocca and Donald Dean. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved family: Joyce and Jamie Kirby; Adeline Didier; Tina Cox; Brian, Allison, Natalie and Dean Kirby; Scott Dean and Toni Dean; Vickie Meyer; Jarrod Cox; Carolyn Miller; Susie and Mike Waugh and their family; Buddy Copeland; Nick Copeland and his family; Lucinda Brown, who was her dear friend for over 40 years, and a beautiful extended family that comprised many very special friends from Hope House Foundation.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 5th at 11:00AM at Forest Lawn Cemetery located at 8100 Granby St in Norfolk, VA. Following the graveside service there will be a Celebration of Life service at Ocean View Christian Reformed Church located at 1241 Hillside Avenue in Norfolk, VA, 23503. The Celebration of Life service will begin at 12:30pm with the family receiving visitors just prior to the service at the church.

Charlotte, you were always such a bright light to all that knew you. You cherished your family and friends, always showing your excitement to see them. I will always remember that Easter, 25+ years ago, that you and I showed up in Church wearing the exact same outfit! We both smiled!! Rest peacefully and know you will be missed. Love you!!

Charlotte was so easy to love. She laughed easily, loved to have fun, was thoughtful and generous, and was simply a joy to be around. From traveling with her to several Tina Turner concerts, to having sleep-overs at my house, to simply going with her grocery shopping weekly for years, she had such an ease about her that was fun, and calming at the same time. She had her opinions and was no pushover, another quality I admired. She was tough as nails, actually. Though I first got to know her in 1986, we really connected during the time she was recuperating from being hit by a car in the late 80's when I was her primary support at HHF. It was a traumatic, painful, and long recuperation in a number of facilities and Charlotte taught me much about patience, resilience and humility. What made Charlotte happiest was being around those she loved. She truly made the best of her life, even though she met her share of life's worst offerings. She will be soooo missed. Condolences to Joyce, Jamie, Tina, Adeline, and all her "people".

So many memories.. I don’t even have a clue where to start.. From our babydoll shopping trips, milkshake dates, Halloween/ Christmas movie binges, to the winter wonderland showers.. She made every moment just so much more special. Even just us sitting around popping chewing gum laughing our butts off about who could make the loudest pop.. She was such a beaautiful soul.. And that kind and loving spirit will continue to live on beyond us.. Enjoying a world free of pain and worry, waiting for all of her love ones to arrive once their battle is won.

Ms Charlotte, I love you so much. You were the first person I built a relationship with a when I arrived and I thank you for showing me nothing but unconditional love ever since. I’ll be waiting for one of those big, warm hugs when I make it there ❤️
