Obituary

Thomas “Tommy” B. Carpenter, Sr., age 78, of Virginia Beach, Virginia passed away October 10, 2020. Tommy was born on April 7, 1942 in Raeford, North Carolina. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Marjorie and Cecil Oliver.

Tommy graduated from Princess Anne High School in 1962 and held an associates in carpentry before starting his career as a carpenter for Norfolk Public Schools for 36 years. He was also a member of Norview Baptist Church for the last 65 years.

Tommy enjoyed building, tinkering, and taking locks apart. He was proud of his accomplishment of building a pole barn in Suffolk. He liked to mess with electronics and draw, but you’d never lay a hand on his building plans. He kept those in his mind. He loved traveling and spending time with his two youngest granddaughters.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Mabel Carpenter; a daughter, Marjorie “Lynn” (Kevin) Ferrier of Virginia Beach, VA; a son, Thomas B. (Marti) Carpenter of Virginia Beach, VA; eight grandchildren: Athena, Sierra, Alex, Jordan, Andrew, Joel, Jacob, and Alan; brother, Jack (Jackie) Oliver; aunt, Millie Ashurst of Cedar Ridge, CO; cousins, Patsy and Fred Moore of Fayetteville, NC; niece, Belinda (Tom) Bonelli of Suffolk, VA; and nephew, Jimmy Oliver of Virginia Beach, VA.

Thomas will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, and friend. A celebration of life will be held at the Bonelli Farm in the Spring of 2021.

Lynn, I’d like to offer my condolences to you and family since the passing of your father last weekend. I enjoyed hearing you all speak about him and his accomplishments along with his personality. It’s apparent he was a good family man who loved his wife and children, who he thought the world of. He will continue to live on in your hearts, memories, and wood/lock working skills. Keep building in his honor! he will give you the inspiration for both work and art. ~Michelle Bates,MSW~

Tommy was a father to me. I would spend hours talking with him about everything from carpentry to funny stories about old friends!
He was a wonderful grandfather to my two girls, who adored him, and the best father to my wife Lynn.
He was kind, patient, creative and intelligent, with an inner peace I only wish I knew. He inspired me to be a better father and a better man.
He was a good friend, and I am already missing the stories and the laughter we shared.

I meet hundreds of nice people every day, but I do not meet many people as genuinely kind as Tom. He was extremely devoted to Mabel, Lynn, Kevin, and their family. He was immensely proud of and doted on his grandchildren. And in his daily life, he extended patience, honesty, and caring to others. During his final illness, Tom was brave and steadfast, and was much more worried about his family than about himself. He leaves behind a strong legacy, and helped shape his granddaughters Athena and Sierra into confident, upstanding young women. I extend my condolences to Mabel and the entire family, and am grateful for the time that i had with him.

My Pappy was fun to spend time with. He would build Lincoln Logs with me and my sister; he would even put beads and LEGO’s together with us. I would put locks together with him, and build all kinds of electronics with him. He was teaching me to do everything a boy can do, but better! I love my Pappy so much. ~Athena Ferrier~
