Juan Jose Pinargote, of Virginia Beach, born in Ecuador, passed away at age 78 on November 12, 2020.

Juan worked as barber for Holland Plaza Barber Shop for 22 years. He achieved the highest rank in his profession as a master barber. He was also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as a spiritual leader for most of his time.

I met Juan at the library where I volunteered in the English Conversation Club. Shortly after, he asked if I would help him with private English lessons. He was so eager to keep learning and he'd say, I want to sound like you. He was always cheerful and full of good humor. I am so saddened to hear of his passing. Blessings to all of his family and friends.

Although I haven't seen Juan much in recent years, I consider us to be good friends "mi hemano". About 15 years ago he took time from his schedule to help me learn better Spanish. We would take turns reading from The Book of Mormon (in Spanish) and then translating it. I really appreciated his efforts. He is a good an honoroable man and he will take those traits with him as he continues his journey.

My first impression of Mr. Pinargote was this: “His English is impeccable. Why is he in an English Language class? Yes, he was very funny and exuberant. Now I know why he came to class: to lighten the day, especially for those who were new to the U.S. and experiencing a feeling of separation from their mother country. He came to give, no to receive. And he did just that’s God Bless him. My condolences to his family and friends.

Juan was truly a life long learner. A couple of years ago I met Juan at the Central Library in Virginia Beach and invited him to the English Conversation Club.
He attended the club regularly and was constantly seeking to improve his English. He was always positive and had a great sense of humor!
I am honored to have known him and will miss him very much.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to Gladys and the rest of Juan's family. I was a long time customer of Juan's and always enjoyed seeing him. After every haircut he told me "now you are ready for a party". He knew that getting together with friends and family and sharing good times is what life is all about. Juan brought blessings to everyone who knew him, and he will be greatly missed. John C
