He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and everyone’s favorite barber. Al attended the Atlas Barber Academy in NYC and he opened his first barber shop at age 21 in Dumont, New Jersey called “Al’s Barber Shop”. As a young businessman, he knew precisely how many hair cuts he needed to do per day to make his rent and quickly made his namesake shop a success. In 1982, Al and his wife, Lois moved from Bergen County, New Jersey to Sandbridge, Virginia and opened a new salon together in Virginia Beach, named “A&L Hair Garden. The Hair Garden has brought joy to him and his many customers for nearly 40 years. He was notable for his talents behind the chair and his comically strong opinions. You may have thought you knew what hair cut you wanted before coming in to see Al, but he had no problem looking you up and down and telling you what you needed.
Al enjoyed being beside Lois, his wife and companion, at work and in life. A pride and joy in his life was the secret garden he built and planted around their home which was once complete with carrier pigeons. He also loved riding his bicycle and staying active. He loved his family. All of those who knew Al, will remember him for brightening up every room with his big laugh, quick wit, and humorous observations.
Al is survived by his wife Lois, his three children (Anne, Phil, and Eric), 7 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. And of course, the favorite child, his dog Trixie.
The Memorial Mass will be held on Wednesday May 19th at 4pm at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church. Followed by a Celebration of his life at Baja Restaurant in Sandbridge.
Memorial donations / in lieu of flowers may be made to “Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia”
